Arctic Physical Therapy Services Inc. opened in Kodiak in 1996. It began with a single physical therapist who shared space with the original El Chicano’s restaurant. The community quickly embraced this private practice and we moved to our current location at 813 Lower Mill Bay Road in 2000.
It took a few years to find the right location and the building was designed specifically for the practice of physical therapy with large, private treatment rooms, and a flow that would maximize both comfort and privacy for the patient and treating therapist. Large pieces of state-of-the-art equipment were put on a barge from all over the U.S. and assembled by the families and staff that worked there.
In 2002, there were 3 therapists and 2 office personnel. The owner and lead therapist traveled for two years to receive their advanced Doctorates and Sports Therapy Certification. Since that time, we continue to grow and have had the privilege to host both high school and college internships, serve as athletic trainers and sponsors to the Kodiak Football League, provide services to the USCG Rockmore King Clinic for over 15 years, give free ergonomic evaluations and exercise classes, work as adjuncts and professors at Kodiak College, and many other community services.
In 2012, half of our team traveled to Boulder, Colorado to participate in a ½ million dollar grant to bring microscopy to students through Kodiak College. These same team members work in our clinic today! We have had many therapists and patients come in and out of our doors and are proud of our contributions to the community.
In return, the community has supported the only private physical therapy practice on the island. Our philosophy has always been quality over quantity and since our inception in 1996 our motto remains simple and unchanged – “We are committed to providing the highest quality patient care with direct one-on-one services offered by licensed and certified physical therapists.”
